Last Sunday, too cold to venture out to Durham for the weekly soccer game, I sat around with a mug of coffee and a pile of magazines.

A few of the engrossing articles I read:

• In Saveur (Dec/Jan 2018), The Midwest's "Finnish Triangle" is a Land of Saunas and Squeaky Cheeses 
• In Modern Farmer (Issue 18), The Long Shot: Building a Grass-Fed Lamb Operation from Scratch in Montana. A good look at the hard work, and sometimes sadness, it takes to run a farm.
• In Christopher Kimball's Milk Street (January-February 2018), Lablabi: The Best Soup in the World, about a Tunisian chickpea dish. I made this for the family, cutting back a bit on the harissa. Erin and I loved it. I'll make it again.

That article in Saveur had me thinking the food magazine was regaining some of its previous heft. Even though I previously decided to discard my many-years' collection of Saveur issues, I still have the boxes (more procrastination from Anton). Now that I see Saveur is cutting back – half the staff laid off, and moving to quarterly publishing – I may just save these back issues for their history.
